Captain Charles Fitzsimmons leads Western men's golf team to 2nd Place in Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. - Western Mustangs men's golf captain Charles Fitzsimmons shot a 2 under par 68 to finish first overall at the Guelph Invitational Golf tournament held Oct. 6 at the Cutten Club adjacent to the campus of the University of Guelph.

"This was a wonderful score on a tough course with very difficult greens," said coach Jim Waite.

Next best scores were 72 shot by Ryan Clarke from Windsor and Matt Bartolotto from Laurentian.

The Mustangs team actually finished in a tie for first place based on the top four scores, but lost out to Wilfrid Laurier due to a better score by their fifth player. Both teams shot 304.

Western's team featured three rookies along with two of the top players who will be leading Western into the OUA Championships later this month in Hamilton.

Alex Hrycko shot 77 to help with Western's good showing.

"It was a very tight race in the team competition with only three shots separating the first seven teams," Waite said.

Next up for Western will be the Laurier Tournament in Kitchener at the Rebel Creek Course on Tuesday Oct. 14.

Western will be fielding the team they will be taking to the OUA finals the following week.
