Rowing: Nine podium finishes at Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships

MISSISAUGA, Ont. ? This Sunday Feb. 1, members of the Western Mustangs men’s and women’s rowing teams competed at the Canadian Indoor Championships (CIRCs), including coxwains in their respective events. CIRCs are raced on the erg (rowing machine) over the standard 2000m distance.

In the Senior B women’s event, Western women swept the podium with Sarah Black in first with a time of 7:11.9, Lindsay Sferraza in second with 7:21.2 and Mimmi Thompson and Jennifer Martins tied for third with 7:25.3.

Last year’s Senior B women’s lightweight winner, Jaclyn Halko, finished second in the Senior women lightweight event with a time of 7:34.0. Jacob Breuer finished third in the Senior men’s lightweight event with a time of 6:28.8.

Peter McClelland won the Senior men’s event in 6:03.4, while the men’s coxwains Michael Bulger and Dane Lawson finished second and third respectively in 3:37.1 and 3:41.0 (1000m).

CIRCs test rowers' personal fitness levels after long months spent training on the erg. Competitors at this year’s event ranged from 4 to 82 years of age, while several national team women were present, challenged by Phil Monkton, to beat his score.

Next up for Western members is the Ontario Indoor Championships.
