The University of Western Ontario hosts 2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships This Weekend

LONDON, Ont. ? Four members of Western’s women’s wrestling team will compete at the 2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships at Alumni Hall and Thames Hall at The University of Western Ontario, June 16-17.

Jessica Fitzgerald (72 kg), Katrina Huszarik (59 kg), Jennifer Nguyen (55 kg) and former Mustang Terri McNutt (55 kg) will compete at the event, while Mustangs head coach Ray Takahashi will be coaching the London-Western team.

Other local wrestlers competing include defending Commonwealth champion Katie Patroch (59 kg), Erenia Hernandez (67 kg), Samantha Dunlop (48 kg) and Stewart Petrie (74 kg, Greco-Roman).

Twelve countries will compete in this year’s championships including Australia, England, Gambia, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Samoa, Wales and Canada. The championships are held every two years. The first championship was held in 1985 in Glasgow, Scotland. The last championships in 2005 were helpd in Stellenboch (Capetown), South Africa. Most out-of-town athletes will stay at Essex Hall at Western.

Rogers Television will cover the finals matches.

Both freestyle and Greco-Roman styles of wrestling will be featured at the competition. The Greco-Roman wrestling style was first added to the championships in 2005.

McNutt, Nguyen and Patroch will also compete in the Canada Cup of International Wrestling June 23 in Guelph.
