Volleyball teams earn split in weekend games
Feb. 5 and 6: Western drops pair to Queen's but defeats RMC
Bookmark and Share

LONDON, Ont. - A weekend on the road saw the men's and women's volleyball teams return home with a split of matches played.

On Feb. 5, both teams played tough battles with Queen's with the men losing 3-1 in four very tight sets (21-25, 20-25, 29-27, 24-26). Meanwhile, the women's team put up a fight of their own against Queen's and fell short 3-0. It wasn't a blowout by any margin though as the Mustangs kept each and every game within striking distance (19-25, 16-25, 29-31), but couldn't finish off the Gaels.

On Feb. 6, Western earned more positive results as both the men's and women's team defeated RMC in straight sets.

The men's team never let the winless RMC Paladins think about taking a game, winning all three sets convincingly (25-20, 25-18, 25-14). The women's team showed much of the same as they didn't allow the lady Paladins into any game (25-18, 25-20, 25-15).

The win over RMC keeps the Mustangs men atop the OUA standings as they are in a battle for top spot with McMaster and Queen's as they all sit within two points in the standings, with three matches remaining before the playoffs begin.

For the women, they keep in the hunt for second place in the OUA west standings in a tight battle with Waterloo and Brock. The three teams are all within two points of one another, with first place all but wrapped up by the McMaster Marauders. With a showdown left with Waterloo to end the season, it could be a game where the winner claims second place in the OUA West.

Neither the men's or women's team have any home games left in the regular season. The men's and women's team hits the road for matches in Waterloo on Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively. That will end off the regular season for the women while the men will finish it off on Feb. 20 and 21 where they travel to McMaster and Toronto.
