Aikido, “the way of unifying with life energy”, is a martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), as a result of his training and spiritual experiences.
At Western Aikido Club (WAC) we practice Yoshinkan Aikido, which is a style developed by Gozo Shioda (1915-1994), one of Ueshiba sensei’s disciples.
Aikido is based on a simple principle: circular force is applied in harmony with the attacker’s movement to redirect the force of the attack. Entering and turning movements combined with strikes, grabs and throws make use of the attacker’s momentum to protect oneself. Practicing aikido helps develop physical strength, quicker reflexes and self defense tactics.
While most of our classes are based on unarmed defensive and attacking techniques, weapon based techniques are also practiced.
