OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer player Niko Mavrikos of the Western Mustangs was named the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport male athlete of the week for the period ending Sept. 19, 2010.
Joining Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer player Elizabeth Hudon with the weekly honour, Mavrikos has been a big factor in the men's soccer team's undefeated start.
Mavrikos, a third-year management and organizational studies student from Victoria, had a career day of his own last Saturday when he netted all five goals in a 5-0 road win over UOIT, including four in a span of 17 minutes. Earlier in the week, the talented striker had helped undefeated Western blank Windsor 3-0.
The Mustangs, who moved up two spots to No. 3 in the CIS Top 10 following the two victories and have the best record in the nation at 6-0-1.
Saint Mary’s soccer player Adam Miller, Laval cross-country runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and Trinity Western soccer player Andrew Fink were the other male nominees.
Hudon, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Prince Albert, Sask., had a career weekend tallying five goals and two assists to help the Huskies (1-2-1) pick up their first points of the young Canada West season with a 9-0 shutout of Lethbridge and a 2-2 draw against Calgary. StFX rugby player Tyson Beukeboom, McGill cross-country runner Sarah McCuaig and Guelph field hockey player Brienne Stairs were also nominated for the women’s award.
