Battle of nationally ranked squads set for nation's capital

Sept. 6: Western at Ottawa, 1 p.m. (Frank Clair Stadium)

LONDON, Ont. - For the second straight season, the Western Mustangs visit the Ottawa Gee-Gees in a pivotal meeting between nationally ranked schools.

Last year, it was the Mustangs, then ranked No. 2, who came out on top defeating No. 10 Ottawa 32-17 at Frank Clair Stadium. This year Ottawa is ranked No. 5 while the Mustangs are No. 9.

For the fourth straight season, the Gee-Gees and Mustangs play in the firs two weeks of the season. The past three have been barnburners.

Two were thrillers, coming down to key plays in the last minute, and certainly were games to remember.

This one promises to offer a lot of the same when the teams kickoff at 1 p.m. on Monday Sept. 6 at Frank Clair Stadium in the nation’s capital.

Rogers TV, Cable 13, will broadcast the game on tape delay at 7:30 p.m. in the London market. Both AM 1290 CJBK (www.cjbk.com) and CHRW 94.9 FM (www.chrwradio.com/listen/) will provide live broadcasts.

Western has won the past four meetings between the teams.

Led by quarterback Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.), who was also highly sought as a recruit by the Western Mustangs, the Gee-Gees, coached by rookie bench-boss J.P. Asselin, will be a formidable test for Western.

Ottawa is coming off a 23-14 road win over Windsor.
