Mustangs come up short against Toronto

Western falls to 1-1 on weekend action

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday afternoon. After a tightly battled game, the Mustangs came up just short losing 4-3.

Coming off a big win over Ryerson yesterday, it looked as if the Mustangs continued to ride the momentum as Kendra Deller scored just 15 seconds into the game. Katherine Dillon and Stacey Scott drew assists on the goal.

The Varsity Blues responded at 10:43 when Jacqueline Scheffel beat Mustangs goalie Kelly Campbell, making up for the penalty she took earlier. Natalie Hughes earned the assist.

Lindsay Gidomski gave the Mustangs the lead at 9:56 of the second on the powerplay. She buried a beautiful wrist shot glove side, beating Toronto’s Nicole Kesteris and sending her water bottle flying in the process. Carly Rolph and Katelyn Gosling assisted on the go ahead marker.

The Varsity Blues answered once again with a powerplay goal at 14:31 and then an even strength tally just moments later at 15:51. Goals were scored by Amanda Fawns and Ragan Danford with assists going to Brittany Kirby, Karolina Urban, Courtney Tougas and Hughes.

Toronto had a two goal lead for the majority of the third courtesy of Danford’s second of the game that came just 2:34 into the period. Callie Bazak and Tougas drew assists on the goal.

Down two goals, Western pulled goalie Campbell at 16:53 of the third to give themselves a man advantage.

Dillon scored with 37 seconds left to pull her team to within one, but unfortunately that was as close as the Mustangs would get. Deller and Scott assisted on the final tally.

The Mustangs do not return to action until Thursday, January 7th, 2012 as they play host to the Laurier Golden Hawks with a scheduled 7:30 PM puck drop. For tickets go to   http://westernmustangstickets.universitytickets.com/user_pages/category.asp?id=84
