Seedhouse scores 11th season goal in 5-1 loss to Brock

Feb.11: Brock 5, Western 1

LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs fell 5-1 to the Brock Badgers on Feb.11 in Thompson Arena.

Captain Ellie Seedhouse scored the single Western goal. Kelly Walker, Courtney Sutherland, Leigh Vanderveen, Maja Samborski, and Jessica Fickle netted the goals for Brock, solidifying their second-place position in the OUA West.

The game opened with disappointment for the Mustangs as Brock scored a fluke goal through the legs of Olivia Ross within the first 17 seconds of play. Western picked up the pace and countered Brock's strong offense with a stellar defense, led by Tara Cation and Meghan Hewins. Even with double penalties against the Mustangs, Brock could not gain a second advantage and the first period closed at 1-0.

Brock came out in the second with more momentum and pressed towards the Western zone. The Badger's aggression got the best of them when they were handed back-to-back penalties at 4:29 and 7:00 in the period. Though the Mustangs were at a gain, Brock demonstrated why they were number two in the OUA West by stealing the puck from Mustang possession to edge a short-handed goal at 7:52 on the clock. Collisions frequented the remainder of the period as the Mustangs were desperate to put a point on the scoreboard.

Ross was pulled from net at 16:52 and replaced by Alison Lee, who remained goaltender for the duration of the game.

A penalty call to the Badger's Sara Brady gave Western the window they needed as Li and Katie Dillon set up the puck for Seedhouse, who fired it past Clause, earning her 11th goal of the season. Cation was given a body checking penalty at 19:27 and Brock exploited 23 seconds later with their third goal of the night. The Mustangs were set at a 3-1 disadvantage heading into the final period.

Powerplay opportunities were handed back-and-forth to both teams in the third. While Western failed to capitalize on their powerplay opportunities, the Badger's used their numbers advantage to notch one more point on the board. Cation's aggression warranted her a double minor, alongside Brock's Karolyn McIlmoyle at 12:33. Again, the Badger's speed could not be matched and they profited on a third powerplay goal, locking the scoreboard at 5-1 through the end of the third.

Ross and Li combined for 38 saves, while Clause turned away 20 shots.

Honour's were awarded to Western's Ellie Seedhouse and Brock's Beth Clause, who helped bring home the gold medal for Team Canada in the Winter Univeriade in Erzurum, Turkey.

The Mustangs will play their final game of the season Feb.12 against Guelph at 4 p.m. in Thompson Arena.
