OTTAWA (CIS) – Western Offensive Lineman Matt Norman has been listed as the number 11 prospect for the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft. Norman, a 6-foot3, 317-pound senior from Châteauguay, Que., anchors the powerful Mustangs offensive line, which is a major component of Western's CIS-leading rushing game.
University of Saskatchewan guard Ben Heenan is the number one prospect for the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft. The CFL’s Scouting Bureau published Monday its initial Top 15 list of the season. Heenan heads a group of nine CIS players to make the cut, including seven ranked in the top eight.
Heenan, a 6-foot-4, 310-pound senior, was named a first-team CIS all-Canadian a year ago in his third campaign with the Huskies. The native of Regina is also a former Canada West rookie of the year.
Other CIS standouts included on the Scouting Bureau’s September list are Wilfrid Laurier wide receiver Shamawd Chambers at No. 2, Laval linebacker Frédéric Plesius at No. 4, Calgary offensive lineman Kirby Fabien at No. 5, Sherbrooke wide receiver Ismaël Bamba at No. 6, Saskatchewan defensive back Bryce McCall at No. 7, Sherbrooke wideout Simon Charbonneau-Campeau at No. 8, Western Ontario guard Matt Norman at No. 11 and McGill kicker Austin Anderson at No. 12.
Plesius, McCall, Charbonneau-Campeau and Norman were also first-team all-Canadians in 2010.
Charbonneau-Campeau, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., was the Quebec conference MVP and a nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy last season.
Plesius, a 6-foot-1, 245-pound junior from Laval, Que., was a finalist for the Presidents’ Trophy as CIS defensive player of the year and led the Rouge et Or to a Vanier Cup championship.
Last spring, St. Francis Xavier linebacker Henoc Muamba, the 2010 Presidents’ Trophy winner, became the fifth straight CIS player – and the ninth in 12 years - to be selected first overall in the CFL Canadian Draft.
The CFL’s Scouting Bureau is comprised of CFL scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league’s eight teams.
