ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The visiting Western Mustangs women’s basketball team outscored the Brock Badgers a combined 40-29 in the second and third quarters Saturday afternoon en route to knocking off the No. 8-ranked team in the CIS, 69-66, at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Trailing 52-47 through three quarters, the Badgers made a run in the fourth and tied the game at 65-65, but the Mustangs retook the lead, 67-65, when
Laura Dally made her third straight bucket (and seventh straight point). Badgers forward Samantha deJong was fouled with four seconds on the clock, but was only able to make one of two free throws. Western’s
Lacey Knox then clinched the game with a pair of last-second free throws to give Western the three-point upset win.
With their second straight victory, the Mustangs improved to 5-7 on the season, while the No. 8 Badgers are now 10-3.
Dally led the Mustangs’ attack, going 9-for-16 from the field for a game-high 21 points. The second-year guard also had a team-high eight rebounds on the afternoon to go along with a steal and a block. Knox contributed across the board with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal, while
Jenny Vaughan had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Andrea Polischuk was the top scorer for the Badgers, going 7-for-14 for 15 points. Nicole Rosenkranz posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Brock took an early six-point lead, 18-12, after the first quarter, but the Mustangs quickly fought back to tie the score at 32-32 at halftime. Western then outscored Brock 20-15 in the third quarter to go up by five.
The Mustangs shot very well from the field overall, going 28-for-59 (47.5%) on the afternoon, including 5-for-12 (41.7%) from three-point range. The Badgers, on the other hand, struggled from the field, shooting 31.3% overall (26-for-83), and just 23.5% (8-for-34) from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs (5-7) are back in action this Wednesday night, Jan. 18, when they return home to face the first-place Windsor Lancers (11-2) at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall. For tickets,
