The newly No. 2 CIS-ranked Western Mustangs head into Saturday's game fresh off a pair of 1-0 shutout victories over this same Lakehead team last weekend, which knocked the previously No. 8 Thunderwolves out of the CIS top 10. Keaton Turkiewicz scored the lone goal in last Friday's win, while Zach Harnden put home the winner in Saturday's victory. Mustang goaltender Josh Unice, who earned shutouts in both contests, was named both OUA and CIS Athlete of the Week for his role in Western's wins, which put them six points ahead of Lakehead for first place in the conference. That lead moved to seven points heading into action Friday, as the Mustangs lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Windsor Lancers on Thursday night (Jan. 26). With a record of 10-0-0 at Thompson Arena this season, Western is the OUA's only unbeaten team at home.

Turkiewicz leads the OUA in scoring with 41 points on the season, while Unice currently leads the conference with a .934 save percentage and is second with a 2.09 goals against average. Lakehead has a well-balanced offensive attack, as five different players have 20 or more points and five different players have eight or more goals this season. Adam Sergerie's 11 goals top the team, while Matt Caria has the most points (26). The Mustangs will look to stay out of the penalty box Saturday night, as the Thunderwolves have the OUA's best road power play record, scoring on 26.2% of their opportunities this season. Their road penalty kill record, meanwhile, also ranks third in the conference.
