The No. 3 CIS-ranked Mustangs (19-2-3) come into Friday night's contest in first place in the OUA West division, nine points ahead of both Waterloo (14-7-4) and Lakehead (16-8-0), the two teams they'll face this weekend. In fact, Western has clinched first place in the West. Following a
2-1 shootout loss to Windsor on the road last Thursday night (Jan. 26), the Western men rebounded on Saturday (Jan. 28) with a
4-0 win over Lakehead to take the division crown. The Mustangs have won four out of their last five, and nine out of their last 11 regular season contests.
The Warriors, meanwhile, will head into Friday's game having won three out of their last four, including a 5-2 win over UOIT on Saturday (Jan. 28) in their most recent outing. Andy Smith had two goals and an assist in that contest, and is one of four Waterloo players with 20 or more points on the season. Kirt Hill leads the way with 32.
Keaton Turkiewicz has a team-leading 41 points for Western, which was also good for the league lead following play last weekend. Waterloo is 5-5-2 on the road, while Western is the OUA's only unbeaten team at home with a perfect 11-0-0 record at Thompson Arena thus far in 2011-12.

Three of Western's last five games have come against Lakehead, and the Mustangs have won each of them. Prior to
last Saturday's 4-0 win over the Thunderwolves, the Western men went into Thunder Bay and earned a pair of 1-0 shutout wins in back-to-back nights on
Jan. 20 and
Jan. 21. Western goaltender
Josh Unice came away with shutouts in all three of those contests, and he took over the OUA lead in goals against average (1.96) after play last weekend. He also leads the conference with a .936 save percentage.
Saturday's game marked Lakehead's fifth loss in a row, and they fell into a tie with Waterloo for second in the OUA West division. The Wolves scored a combined two goals during the most recent four losses. Prior to their five-game losing streak, however, Lakehead won nine in a row from Nov. 11 to Jan. 13. Five different players have 20 or more points for the Wolves, though none are among the league's top scorers. Following play last weekend, Matt Caria led the way with 26 points.
