LONDON, Ont. – Seven different Western Mustangs teams – including men’s hockey, men’s volleyball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s wrestling – found themselves ranked in the top 10 Tuesday, as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) released its weekly national rankings.

The Mustangs’ men’s volleyball team climbed one spot to No. 5 on Tuesday after a 2-0 weekend, which included a 3-0 sweep of McMaster in a highly-anticipated match between the top two teams in the OUA on Saturday (Jan. 28). Western then followed that up with another 3-0 sweep on Sunday (Jan. 29) against the York Lions. With the two victories, the Mustangs improved to 15-1 on the season and currently sit six points ahead of McMaster (12-3) for first place in the conference.

Western’s men’s hockey team dropped one spot to No. 3 on Tuesday following a 1-1 week. The Mustangs clinched first place in the OUA West over the weekend with a 4-0 win over Lakehead on Saturday night (Jan. 28), marking their third win against the Wolves in nine days. With the win, Western remained unbeaten at home with a perfect 11-0-0 record. In their only other game last week, the Mustangs fell 2-1 in a shootout on the road to the Windsor Lancers on Thursday (Jan. 26). At 19-2-3, Western sits nine points ahead of both Lakehead (16-8-0) and Waterloo (14-7-4) in the West.

The Mustangs’ women’s track and field team also dropped one spot this week (to No. 2), despite another successful weekend – this time at the 17th annual McGill Team Challenge, widely considered the most competitive meet in Eastern Canada. The Western women won the team title, finishing with 68 points (23 ahead of second-place Toronto). The Mustangs had 17 top six finishes, including two gold medals, four silver and three bronze.

Western’s men’s track and field team, meanwhile, held onto its No. 5 ranking this week. At the McGill Team Challenge, the men placed 2nd with 57 points, 12 behind York. The Mustangs had 13 top six finishes, including three gold medals, four silver and two bronze.

The Mustang’s women’s swimming team came in at No. 6 this week, down two spots from their previous rank. At a Quad Meet hosted by Brock University on Saturday (Jan. 28), the Mustangs posted an impressive 37 top 3 finishes.

Western’s men’s wrestling team held onto its No. 4 rank this week, while the women dropped one spot to No. 6. Both teams were in action last weekend. Half of the Mustangs represented the London-Western municipal wrestling club at the Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships, and both men and women claimed championships at the Under-20 event. Meanwhile, the remainder of competitors clinched top spot on home soil at the Western Open Tournament at Thames Hall.
