GUELPH, Ont. – The Western Mustangs’ women’s basketball team used a big 28-point second quarter on the road Wednesday night to run away with a 73-50 win over the Guelph Gryphons.

Leading by two after the first quarter, the Mustangs went on a 15-2 run to open the second, capped by a pair of buckets (including a three-pointer) by
Annabel Hancock. Western went on to outscore the Gryphons 28-10 in the period to take a commanding 20-point lead (42-22) at the half. It was smooth sailing after that for the Mustangs, who cruised to the 23-point win to improve to 8-9 on the season. With the loss, the Gryphons fell to 7-10.
During their offensive barrage in the second quarter, the Western women went an impressive 10-for-16 from the floor. And the scoring was spread out, as seven different Mustang players accounted for the 28 points.
Overall,
Katelyn Leddy went 5-for-6 from the field and finished with a team-high 15 points for the visiting team.
Jory McDonald was big on the glass, coming down with a game-high 13 rebounds. On a night where Western’s regular top scorers,
Jenny Vaughan and
Laura Dally, struggled to shoot a combined 4-for-18, Western got solid production from its bench, as Hancock and
Lacey Knox had 13 and 12 points, respectively, in the win.
Samantha Russell was the top scorer for the Gryphons, making 6-of-18 shots for 16 points. Jasmine Douglas, meanwhile, posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
As a team, the Mustangs combined to shoot 40.6% (26-for-64) overall Wednesday night, compared to Guelph’s 26.6% (17-for-64). The Gryphons were just 3-for-17 from three-point range, while Western went 9-for-22. Hancock and
Rebecca Moss (three each) combined for six of those three-pointers. On the night, Western outrebounded Guelph 45-33.
The Mustangs (8-9) will return home this Saturday, Feb. 4, for a game against the Brock Badgers (12-6) at 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall. For tickets,
