Mustangs take Game 1 over Toronto

With Wednesday night's 4-1 win, Western has taken a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series

TORONTO, Ont. -- Western goaltender Kelly Campbell made 36 stops and the Mustangs notched four power play goals en route to a 4-1 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Wed. Feb. 15. in Game 1 of a best-of-three OUA quarter-final series.

Carly Rolph, Lindsay Gidomski, Marianne Filson and Michelle Saunders each scored power play markers for the Mustangs. Gidomski added two assists for a three-point night.

Rolph notched Western's first goal of the game only 1:20 after the drop of the puck. Gidomski added a second goal just 35 seconds later.

Toronto's Callie Bazak scored the only second period goal as Mustangs' Filson and Saunders deposited third period goals for a 4-1 final.

The Mustangs capitalized on four of six power play opportunities while holding the Varsity Blues scoreless on eight man-advantage chances.

Campbell earned the game's first star for her work against the Varsity Blues, who outshot Western 37-28 on the night.
