LONDON, Ont. -- The Mustangs men’s hockey team was the top Western squad in this week's Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rankings, as the men earned the No. 1 spot in the country for the first time in a decade. Meanwhile, six other Mustangs teams found themselves with top 10 rankings in their respective sports on Tuesday.
Western's men's hockey team (21-2-3) jumped ahead of both UNB (17-5-3) and McGill (20-4-2), receiving a total of 152 points from the 17-member media panel (including six first-place votes), to finish nine points ahead of UNB and earn the No. 1 spot for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The Mustangs went 2-0 last week,
beating Waterloo 5-1 on Friday night (Feb. 3), and
downing Lakehead 7-4 on Saturday night (Feb. 4) to move 11 points ahead of the Thunderwolves in the OUA West and improve to a perfect 13-0-0 at home.
Western's men’s volleyball team, meanwhile, held onto its No. 5 spot in the rankings this week despite a rare loss on Saturday (Feb. 4) when they were
swept 3-0 by Queen's on the road. On Sunday (Feb. 5), the men regrouped with a
3-0 win over RMC to improve to 16-2 on the season, six points ahead of the McMaster Marauders (13-3) for first place in the OUA West.
The Mustangs’ women’s track and field team dropped four spots to No. 6 this week, while the men's team remained at No. 5. Both teams had successful weekends split between the
25th Annual Meyo Invitational and the York Open.
Western's women’s swimming team (No. 6) and women's wrestling team (No. 6) retained their ranks from last week, while the men's wrestling squad dropped one spot to No. 5.
