WINNIPEG (CIS) – At the end of the first day of competition at the 2012 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) track and field championship at the University of Manitoba’s Max Bell Fieldhouse in Winnipeg, reigning champion Windsor sits in first place in the female standing while York University holds the lead in the male standing ahead of last season’s champion Windsor.

On the quietest day of the three-day National event, there was still plenty of noise generated by strong performances on the track and in the field.

To start the proceedings off, York’s Kristin Obrochta defended her 2010 title (she did not compete in last season’s Championship). In the women’s weight throw, she won by 16 cm over teammate Cynthia Appiah with a throw of 17.83m on her fifth attempt. The 1-2 finish by the Lions accounted for the 18 points for the team and placed them second in the women’s team standing.

Obrochta commented, “There was a lot pressure throughout the competition as it was a back-and-forth and I made a good throw in the fifth round. I was sweating buckets until after the last throws and now the pressure is off for the shot put.”

In the marquee events of the night, the women’s 60m race was won by UQAM’s Kimberly Hyacinthe, for a second consecutive Championship title, in a quick time of 7.45 while York’s Dontae Richards-Kwok won by the slightest of margin (0.01) over Aaron Bowman of Windsor in a time of 6.74.

Hyacinthe stated, “Not too happy with the time but I will take it and get ready for the 300m tomorrow. This is preparations for outdoor 200m and Canadian National Olympic Trials later this year.” Richards-Kwok won his first Championship title in the 60m after being a gold medalist in the 300m in 2011. He said, “I had a strong start and the second piece was key to the finish. My goal is win gold in all four (300, 4x200, 4x400) – why not? I train for six months to win and come out and be better than the best.”

The 600m heats were run for both female and male and heading into the Saturday’s finals as top seed are CIS Rookie of the Year Rachel Francois of Victoria (1:31.48) and Adam Gaudes of Victoria (1:19.58).

In the culmination of day one, the women’s and men’s pentathlon were completed. Rachael McIntosh of Calgary blew through her personal best by eclipsing the 4000 point mark and winning by over 300 when she posted a final total of 4016. “I made PB’s (personal best) in three of five events and wanted to improve on silver from last year’s Championship,” stated gold medalist McIntosh. For the men, an upset occurred on the final straightaway as Saskatchewan’s Keegan Sharp nipped first seed Mark Chenery of Ottawa by 35 points with a mad dash at the end of the 1000m and earn the gold with 3846 total points. “I was consistent with all my events and my goal was to get the gold. Having my parents here to watch the competition was pretty special,” commented Keegan.
