Seven Mustangs selected to OUA All-Star Game vs. Toronto at Rogers Centre

OUA All-Star team to take on the Varsity Blues this Sunday in sixth annual Baseball Classic

HAMILTON, Ont. – The best baseball players in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) will be on display at the Rogers Centre on Sunday, May 20 as the 2011 champion Toronto Varsity Blues take on the OUA all-stars in the sixth annual OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase.

The Varsity Blues claimed the OUA championship with a victory over the Western Mustangs in the OUA finals in 2011. The Varsity Blues finished in a tie for third in the regular season with a 12-9 record and ran the table in the double elimination championship tournament defeating Western, Laurier and Western again to win their first championship since 2003.

Toronto had outstanding pitching in 2011 led by veterans Marek Deska (Mississauga, Ont.),Tyler Wilson (Port Hope, Ont.) and Andrew Bergman (Pickering, Ont.). Though the Blues’ offense wasn’t remarkable, the team pushed across enough wins to allow their pitchers to control the games.

The OUA all-star team will be comprised of student-athletes from the other seven schools that complete on the OUA circuit, including Laurier, Western, Brock, Guelph, McMaster, Queen’s and Waterloo. OUA Pitcher of the Year, Adam Lentz (Calgary, Alta.) of the Waterloo Warriors will get the start for the all-star team, which also includes 2011 Hitter of the Year Shaun Valeriote(Guelph, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers and OUA Rookie of the Year Jonathan Brouse (Port Perry, Ont.) of the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The 2012 game marks the sixth annual OUA All-Star Showcase. In 2011, Brock came back late to rally past the All-Stars in an exciting game. The all-star team holds a 2-2-1 record with the inaugural game in 2007 ending in a tie.

The OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase will take place following the Toronto Blue Jays game against the New York Mets which begins at 1:07 p.m. Fans can enter Rogers Centre through Gate 8 free of charge following the Blue Jays game (approximately 4:30 p.m.), or purchase tickets to both by visiting bluejays.com.

The OUA All-Star Showcase is made possible with the help of Wilson, Pizza Pizza and the Toronto Blue Jays.
