Alexandra Bruce named to Canadian Olympic team

Former Mustang to compete in London in women's doubles badminton

LONDON, Ont. - Alexandra Bruce (Toronto, Ont.), a former member of the Western Mustangs badminton team, will be representing Canada this summer as a member of the national team competing in the Olympics. Bruce will compete in the doubles tournament alongside partner Michelle Li (Markham, Ont.). 

Li and Bruce have previouslly excelled on the international stage, winning a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico.

"The Olympic Games are the goal for any high performance athlete," said Bruce in a Canadian Olympic Committee press release. "I'm excited to get on the court with Michelle and get playing."

A Civil Engineering student, Bruce played two years at Western before taking a break from her studies to pursue badminton at the international level. She was an OUA All-Star in her two seasons of competition from 2008-2010 as well as the 2008-2009 OUA Women's Badminton Rookie of the Year.

The Olympic tournament kicks off on July 28th at Wembly Arena in London, finishing up with the medal events on August 5th.
