Western players look for Team West win in 2012 East West Bowl

London, Ont. -- As host of the East West Bowl for the fourth consecutive year, the Western Mustangs have six of its players representing Team West.

On defense, Western is represented with Sean Blake, Pawel Kruba, Mike Spence, and Jamie Symianick. Lirim Hajrullahu takes the helm of kicker/punter again this year.

Bone-crushing hits from Burlington, Ont., native Spence have been making receivers think twice about catching the ball. This Nelson High School product was a highly touted defensive recruit in 2009 and has exceeded expectations. Spence has been a starter for the Mustangs since day one and received an OUA Second Team All-Star nod in 2011 for his exceptional play. When asked about the chance to put his talents in front of all eight CFL teams Spence explained, “It was great to be invited to compete among the best prospects in the country. I have been training hard and feel that not only my physical play, but my testing, will set me apart from the others.”

From his first day with the Western Mustangs, Pawel Kruba has made a significant impact on special teams. In 2011, Kruba took over as the leader of a stout linebacking corps leading the defense to another Yates Cup appearance. His undeniable athletic ability and tenacity complement his leadership on and off the field. “The opportunity to play in the East West Bowl, after seeing it firsthand by helping out the past couple of years, is exciting”, said Kruba.

The only offensive player from Western playing in the East West Bowl, Eric Armitage, an offensive lineman is a third-year King’s University College student.

Over the past three seasons, special teams member, and kicker, Lirim Hajrullahu has had an enormous impact on the Western Mustangs with 114 field goal attempts for 6,580 yards. In 2011, he represented Canada for the second time as part of the silver medal-winning performance in Austria at the World Football Championships and at the 2010 Yates Cup, Hajrullahu kicked a last-second 34-yard field goal to clinch Western’s 29th conference championship. The 2012 East West Bowl will be Hajrullahu’s second consecutive.

Prior to Saturday’s game, with a 1 p.m. kickoff, the CFL Free Agent Combine will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, for players eligible to attend the 2012 CFL Training Camps and not playing in the East West Bowl.
