Western found success once again this past weekend at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia! This year was particularly special, marking the 75
th year since the regatta’s birth, and the ‘stangs celebrated the occasion by winning some hardware.
Just two female crews were sent to Philly this year; a varsity heavyweight 4+ (Nat Caminsky, Kathleen Morrison, Natalie Connell, Addie Barr and Chaundra Manorome) and a freshman/novice 8+ (Emily Thompson, Maria Brydon, Esma Mrklajevic, Jade Farhat, Sarah Reid, Maria Schrempf, Katherine Jones, Leah Taylor, and Alex Stefanovski). The crews were coached by Lightweight Women’s Varsity Coach, Matt Waddell, and Heavyweight Women’s Varsity Coach, Bob Ward.
The Varsity Heavyweight 4+ struck gold in lane 4 in Sunday’s final in a time of 7:29.6, beating Bucknell (silver) by eight seconds! The crew celebrated winning the Margaret McNiff Trophy with the coxie toss of Nat Caminsky.
The Women’s Frosh/Novice Heavyweight 8+ won silver, beat out for first only by Michigan’s Grand Valley University. This was an extremely impressive result for this young crew, composed of all first year athletes and/or first year rowers; 4 crew members were introduced to rowing just this past September!
With such a successful weekend for the Mustangs women on the international stage, the entire team is excited for the fast approaching fall season. See you all at training camp in August!
